The house in Mers Sultan
Childhood · Casablanca · winter 1957
There were six of us children in two rooms, in Mers Sultan. Every morning my mother lit the kanoun in the courtyard, and the smell of baking bread has never left me. My father left for the factory at five. I was seven, I think; it was the winter it snowed on the Atlas, in 1957.
